Google Assistant with Bard: New generative AI features

On iOS, we’ll roll out access to Gemini right from the Google app in the coming weeks. Kambhampati also says Google’s claim that 100 AI experts were impressed by Gemini is similar to a toothpaste tube boasting that “eight out of 10 dentists” recommend its brand. It would be more meaningful for Google to show clear improvements on reducing the hallucinations that language models experience when serving web search results, he says. Remember that all of this is technically an experiment for now, and you might see some software glitches in your chatbot responses. One of the current strengths of Bard is its integration with other Google services, when it actually works.

The smaller version of the AI model, fitted to work as part of smartphone features, is called Gemini Nano, and it’s available now in the Pixel 8 Pro for WhatsApp replies.

With the image benchmarks we tested, Gemini Ultra outperformed previous state-of-the-art models, without assistance from optical character recognition (OCR) systems that extract text from images for further processing.

This conversational overlay is a completely new way to interact with your phone. And just like both Bard and Assistant, it’ll be built with your privacy in mind — ensuring that you can choose your individual privacy settings. And even when the language it’s trained on is carefully vetted, the model itself can still be put to ill use. It’s unlikely that Gmail Q&A will come to free Gmail users anytime soon. Instead, Google is pushing features like Gmail Q&A to convince users that the expensive monthly subscription Chat GPT costs for Gemini are worth it. The company is also adding Gemini to all of its existing products, including Google Docs, Gmail, Google Calendar and more — but it all comes at a price. Thus far, these AI products are Google’s best shot at generating revenue off of Gemini.

Unfortunately, there is also a lot of spam in the GPT store, so be careful which ones you use.

OpenAI recommends you provide feedback on what ChatGPT generates by using the thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons to improve its underlying model. You can also join the startup’s Bug Bounty program, which offers up to $20,000 for reporting security bugs and safety issues. But with the power of VLA models like RT-2, robots can access a larger set of information to infer what to do next. Satisfied that the Pixel 7 Pro is a compelling upgrade, the shopper next asks about the trade-in value of their current device. Switching back  to responses grounded in the website content, the assistant answers with interactive visual inputs to help the user assess how the condition of their current phone could influence trade-in value.

That may be inspired by the downright ebullient chatbots launched by some smaller AI upstarts, such as Pi from startup Inflection AI and the various app-specific personae that ChatGPT’s custom GPTs now have. Now Google is consolidating many of its generative AI products under the banner of its latest AI model Gemini—and taking direct aim at OpenAI’s subscription service ChatGPT Plus. A version of the model, called Gemini Pro, is available inside of the Bard chatbot right now. Also, anyone with a Pixel 8 Pro can use a version of Gemini in their AI-suggested text replies with WhatsApp now, and with Gboard in the future. Overall, it appears to perform better than GPT-4, the LLM behind ChatGPT, according to Hugging Face’s chatbot arena board, which AI researchers use to gauge the model’s capabilities, as of the spring of 2024.

With the user’s permission, Siri can request ChatGPT for help if Siri deems a task is better suited for ChatGPT. On February 6, 2023, Google introduced its experimental AI chat service, which was then called Google Bard. Upon launching the prototype, users were given a waitlist to sign up for. When searching for as much up-to-date, accurate information as possible, your best bet is a search engine. Microsoft’s Copilot offers free image generation, also powered by DALL-E 3, in its chatbot. This is a great alternative if you don’t want to pay for ChatGPT Plus but want high-quality image outputs.

Smartphone users can download the Google Gemini app for Android or the Google app with built-in AI capabilities for the iPhone. Those who own the tech company’s Pixel 8 can expect to see Gemini Nano, the smallest version of the model, on their phones after the next feature drop that could arrive in June 2024. Our highest priority, when creating technologies like LaMDA, is working to ensure we minimize such risks. We’re deeply familiar with issues involved with machine learning models, such as unfair bias, as we’ve been researching and developing these technologies for many years. Enterprise search apps and conversational chatbots are among the most widely-applicable generative AI use cases. Then, in the following decade, Google acquired DeepMind, at the time a little-known AI research company.

Each Gemini model is built for its own set of use cases, making a versatile model family that runs efficiently on everything from data centers to on-device. Gemini’s latest upgrade to Gemini should have taken care of all of the issues that plagued the chatbot’s initial release. The actual performance of the chatbot also led to much negative feedback. The best part is that Google is offering users a two-month free trial as part of the new plan.

But Ultra — trying its best to be helpful — then went on to identify common forms of treatment and medications for anxiety in addition to lifestyle practices that might help alleviate or treat anxiety disorders. Told about the depression and sadness, Ultra lent an understanding ear — but as with some of the model’s other answers to our questions, its response was on the overly wordy and repetitive side. Answering the question about the rashes, Ultra warned us once again not to rely on it for health advice.

We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing. Conversation design is a fundamental discipline that lies at the heart of natural and intuitive conversations with users. Initially intended to help developers design actions on the Google Assistant, the conversation design process has become a de-facto framework at Google to create amazing conversational experiences regardless of channel and device. RT-2 is the new version of what the company calls its vision-language-action (VLA) model. The model teaches robots to better recognize visual and language patterns to interpret instructions and infer what objects work best for the request. Googlebot can crawl the first 15MB of an HTML file or

supported text-based file.

Another example is deepfake scams that have defrauded ordinary consumers out of millions of dollars — even using AI-manipulated videos of the tech baron Elon Musk himself. As AI systems become more sophisticated, they increasingly synchronize with human behaviors and emotions, leading to a significant shift in the relationship between humans and machines. While this evolution has the potential to reshape sectors from health care to customer service, it also introduces new risks, particularly for businesses that must navigate the complexities of AI anthropomorphism. But the most important question we ask ourselves when it comes to our technologies is whether they adhere to our AI Principles. Language might be one of humanity’s greatest tools, but like all tools it can be misused. Models trained on language can propagate that misuse — for instance, by internalizing biases, mirroring hateful speech, or replicating misleading information.

My Drama utilizes several AI models, including ElevenLabs, Stable Diffusion, OpenAI and Meta’s Llama 3. Today at Made by Google, we introduced Assistant with Bard, a personal assistant powered by generative AI. It combines Bard’s generative and reasoning capabilities with Assistant’s personalized help. You can interact with it through text, voice or images — and it can even help take actions for you.

In addition to the new generative capabilities, we have also added prebuilt components to reduce the time and effort required to deploy common conversational AI tasks and vertical-specific use cases. These components provide out-of-the-box templates for virtual agents and integrations, including much-requested features for collecting Numerical and Credit Card CVV inputs. Business Messages’s live agent transfer feature allows your agent to start a conversation as a bot and switch mid-conversation to a live agent (human representative). Your bot can handle common questions, like opening hours, while your live agent can provide a customized experience with more access to the user’s context. When the transition between these two experiences is seamless, users get their questions answered quickly and accurately, resulting in higher return engagement rate and increased customer satisfaction.

We are also continuing to add new features to Enterprise Search on Gen App Builder with multimodal image search now available in preview. With multimodal search, customers can find relevant images by searching via a combination of text and/or image inputs. Italian start-up Skillvue thinks the technology certainly has a huge role to play in helping companies hire with greater efficiency and professionalism. The Milan-based business, which is today announcing it has completed a $2.8 million fundraising, also believes AI can help large enterprises with talent development and staff retention. That meandering quality can quickly stump modern conversational agents (commonly known as chatbots), which tend to follow narrow, pre-defined paths. More recently, we’ve invented machine learning techniques that help us better grasp the intent of Search queries. Over time, our advances in these and other areas have made it easier and easier to organize and access the heaps of information conveyed by the written and spoken word.

In ZDNET’s experience, Bard also failed to answer basic questions, had a longer wait time, didn’t automatically include sources, and paled in comparison to more established competitors. Google CEO Sundar Pichai called Bard “a souped-up Civic” compared to ChatGPT and Bing Chat, now Copilot. Yes, in late May 2023, Gemini was updated to include images in its answers.

When OpenAI’s ChatGPT opened a new era in tech, the industry’s former AI champ, Google, responded by reorganizing its labs and launching a profusion of sometimes overlapping AI services. This included the Bard chatbot, workplace helper Duet AI, and a chatbot-style version of search. In February 2024, Google paused Gemini’s image generation tool after people criticized it for spitting out historically inaccurate photos of US presidents. The company also restricted its AI chatbot from answering questions about the 2024 US presidential election to curb the spread of fake news and misinformation. And, in general, Gemini has guardrails that prevent it from answering questions it deems unsafe.

Each resource referenced in the HTML such as CSS and JavaScript is fetched separately, and

each fetch is bound by the same file size limit. After the first 15MB of the file, Googlebot

stops crawling and only sends the first 15MB of the file for indexing consideration. Other Google crawlers, for example Googlebot Video and

Googlebot Image, may have different limits. You can identify the subtype of Googlebot by looking at the

HTTP user-agent request header

in the request. However, both crawler types obey the same product token (user agent token) in

robots.txt, and so you cannot selectively target either Googlebot Smartphone or Googlebot

Desktop using robots.txt.

At a time when actors are concerned about AI’s impact on the industry, it’s interesting that two actors are willing to give a company permission to use their likeness to be an AI companion. However, it’s somewhat reassuring to know that they’re being fairly compensated for it. According to Holywater, the compensation for being an AI companion can exceed their regular actor salary. Since its launch in April, My Drama has rapidly gained traction, boasting 1 million users and $3 million in revenue. Holywater has a strong track record with its products, generating $90 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) across all its offerings. Microsoft has also used its OpenAI partnership to revamp its Bing search engine and improve its browser.

Plus, My Passion has an established fanbase that will likely be eager to see their favorite characters come to life. Of course, you’ll have to bear with occasional hallucinations that plague even the best AI models when using this feature, so maybe don’t trust everything it tells you. Assistant with Bard combines Assistant’s capabilities with generative AI to help you stay on top of what’s most important, right from your phone.

For over two decades, Google has made strides to insert AI into its suite of products. The tech giant is now making moves to establish itself as a leader in the emergent generative AI space. Rivals such as Test Gorilla and Maki People provide competition, but Skillvue believes its move to expand its focus into talent development as well as recruitment can help it secure advantage. Indeed, Skillvue is so convinced of the merits of its technology that it has expanded its remit, with some clients now using it a “skills partner” to assess their existing employees’ competencies on an ongoing basis.

It will only pull its answer from, and ultimately list, a handful of sources instead of showing nearly endless search results.
